Billet guide track for continuous casting plant - where mechanical adjustment of guide roll gap is supported by jacks using grease as hydraulic fluid

The track is formed by a row of segments, which each contain two rows of rolls employed to guide and support the cast billet. The lower rolls are mounted on a fixed base, which has tie rods clamping two side walls. In each wall is a blind hole contg. a vertical rod with a threaded top end for a bush with a threaded bore. Rotation of the bush by a worm and wheel varies the height of a mobile traverse above the fixed base; and the traverse carries the upper rolls. The bush rests on the traverse via a hydraulic jack with a short stroke and using a high viscosity fluid such as grease. The use of hydraulic fluid is avoided which can easily leak out of conventional hydraulic cylinders used to adjust the gap between the rolls.
