Prodn. of amino acids by submerged fermentation of amino-acid-producing microorganisms on a nutrient medium contg. C sources, N sources and mineral salts, where the C source is a mixt. of hexose and pentose monosaccharides, obtd. by percolation hydrolysis of cellulose-contg. vegetable raw materials, from which furfural has been removed and which contains 1-3 wt. %. hydroxymethyl-furfural and ligno-humic materials(w.r.t. of the monosaccharides). The presence of pentose monosaccharides stimulates the growth of the microorganisms and their prodn. of amino acids. Removal of furfural, hydroxymethyl, furfural and ligno-humic materials maximises this stimulation. The amino acids are used in medicine, in the prodn. of synthetic fibres, in the food industry, and in animal rearing.
