A non-destructive ultrasonic test method for pipes and rods involves passing the test piece through a measurement section and time-controlled evaluation of the start and end positions enabling suppression of disturbance signals from the rod or pipe ends. This enables reliable rapid testing including near the ends of the piece. Dimension measurement ultrasonic heads are used to detect the beginning and end of a test piece. The focal lengths of the fault detecting ultrasonic heads are selected to allow for suppression of the unwanted signals from the ends. The distances between the dimension measurement and fault testing heads and the focal lengths are automatically determined using a test specimen with known markings. The method is applicable to nuclear reactor combustion element casing pipe measurement and test.
