The suspension plate (12) is used to secure a false ceiling to floor joists with an inverted 'T' shape. Holes (18) at uniform centres on the stem (13) centre line permit screwing to the joist at alternative heights, and an horizontal notch (20) is provided in each vertical edge of the bar (14). The notches (20) are at the same level, to locate the wings (25) of a relatively elastic internally winged channel section batten (15) to which the ceiling is fixed. The bar (14) corners may be rounded (22) to aid the mounting of battens (5). The bottom edge (23) may have a centering notch (24), and the stem (13) may be stiffened by two vertical corrugation ribs (19).
