Prodn. of ferric sulphonate fuel additives - by reacting sulphonic acid with ferric hydroxide in mixt. of hydrocarbon and oxygenated solvents

Prepn. of organo-soluble ferric sulphonate complexes (I) contg. 6-12 g-atoms of Fe per g-equiv. of sulphonic acid is carried out by (a) reacting a sulphonic acid with Fe(OH)3 in an organic solvent, and (b) separating the (I)-contg. organic phase from the aq. phase. The organic solvent is a mixt. of a water-immiscible organic liq. (II) selected from light aromatic hydrocarbons and light halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons with a b.pt. of 80-230 deg. C, and an organic liq. (III) which has at least one O-contg. function and is at least partially miscible with water and substantially miscible with hydrocarbons. (I) are useful as combustion-improving additiVes for liq. fuels (esp. fuel oils or gas oils).
