New organo-sol. complexes are prepd. by reaction of a long-chain aliphatic sulphonic acid (n g equivalents) with ferric hydroxide (6n to 15n g atoms Fe). A pref. sulphonic acid is one based on isobutene. Reaction is in presence of a solvent comprising (a) an aromatic cpd. or a halogenated aliphatic cpd., both of b.pt. 80-230 deg.C.; and (b) an oxygenated organic cpd. at least partially miscible with water and substantially miscible with hydrocarbons. Aq. and organic phases are present, the organic phase contg. the complex required. Used as improvers of combustion of gas oils and fuel oils when added at a concn. of 10-150 (pref. 30-100)ppm Fe. The Fe content is high. The sulphonic acid is pref. that obtd. by sulphonation of a long-chain olefin or of a polymer or copolymer of olefins or conjugated diolefins. The polymer pref. has mol.wt. 250-3000, and about 0.2-1.2 double bonds per mol.
