Diesel fuels based on gas oil, butanol and acetone - contg. lower alkyl fatty acid ester

Fuel compsns. comprises 10-60 (pref. 10-40) vol.% gas oil, 10-60 (pref. 30-60) vol.% of one or more 1-8C alkyl esters of 12-22C fatty acids, and 10-50 (pref. 30-50) vol.% of a mixt. contg. n-butanol and acetone. The N-BuOH/acetone mixt. pref. contains (a) 40-85 wt.% N-BuOH and 15-60 wt.% acetone, (b) 45-85% n-BuOH, 10-45% i-PrOH and 1-25% acetone, (c) 40-80% n-BuOH, 15-45% acetone and 1-15% EtOH, or (d) 45-75% n-BuOH, 10-40% i-PrOH, 2-15% acetone and 1-10% EtOH. Such mixts. can be produced by fermentation. The esters may be derived from animal flats or vegetable oils, esp. from copra, coconut, palm or cottonseed oil. Specified esters are isopropyl myristate, methyl palmitate or oleate, and methyl, n-butyl or isooctyl stearate. Inclusion of the esters allows the proportion of n-BuOH/ acetone to be increased without an excessive drop in cetane no. (cf. FR2077290).
