Aluminium alloy strip for drawn and ironed cans - contains non-scratching intermetallic particles

The strip is made of an alloy of compsn. (by wt.) 0.8-1.3% Mg, 0.8-1.5% Mn, greater than 0.3% to 0.6% Si, 0.1-0.7% Fe, 0-0.15% each of other elements, balance Al and contains 1-5 vol.% solid particles pref. comprising more than 90 vol.% alpha Al(Mn,Fe)Si and less than 10 vol% Al6(Mn,Fe). During prodn., the strip is heat treated at 450-580 deg.C for 3-24 hrs., cold rolled and heat treated at 300-450 deg.C for 1-5 hrs. The strip is esp. useful for drawn and ironed food can bodies. The increased Si content, compared with conventional AA 3304 alloy, and the heat treatment cause formation of intermetallic particles which do not scratch the drawing and ironing tools.
