The appts. can be combined with a computer controlled food distributor in order to give each animal the quantity of food it needs and to detect its state of health. A cage (7) is automatically closed by two gates (12) such that the animal can be isolated on a weighing platform (2,3) suspended in an enclosed space. When it enters, the animal pushes a yoke (7) of which the displacement controls the closing of the gates (12) and the positioning of a manger and the start of the feeding operation. The animal's weight is measured using the suspended platform (2,3) and a strain gauge system (6). A computer identifies the animal, detects that it is caged and controls the weight and temp. measurement as well as the food distribution.
