The electrolyte is a mixture of P2S5, Li2S and a lithium halide, in which the ratio of Li2S to P2S5+Li2S is within the limits 0.61 to 0.7, and the ratio of the halide to the total does not exceed the halide solubility in the vitreous phase of the other two constituents. The cathode is pref. a mixture of 45 wt.% Cu4O(PO4)2 with 50 wt.% of the solid electrolyte and 5 wt.% of graphite, formed in a steel matrix under pressure of about 750 kg/sq.cm. Other preferred positive active materials include MoO3, WO3, TiS2, NiPS3, Cu- or Pb bismuthate etc. The electrolyte in powder form is spread over the cathode and compressed at 3000 kg/sq.cm., and a lithium disc is placed over it. The stainless steel anode overlies an elastomer spring, through which electrical connection is maintained by two clamps.
