Two electromagnetic clutches or brakes are allowed to turn in opposite senses and are controllable by an internal regulation circuit which accepts the required angular displacement, derived from the master controller. This value is used to determine the extent of the electromagnetic braking required. The gain of the regulator is varied to vary its output, so that inputs above a certain level permit reduced braking, and a timing facility is included so that for a short period the braking is minimal, but is increased over a longer period to give progressive deceleration. The difference between the reference adjustment values and the actual adjustment valve is stored in a memory of the stabilisation regulation circuit. The output of the circuit is compared with a signal representative of the field strength of the brake or clutch.
