A hydraulic motor (1) is coupled mechanically to a load (2) and connected hydraulically in a closed circuit to a variable capacity pump (3) worked by a drive motor. A regulator (R) uses a circuit (C) to vary pump capacity by reacting to a modulated pressure from a pressure reducer (7) which has a slide valve (9) controlling the pressure at the reducer exit. Three forces continuously work at the ends of the valve depending on pump speed, reducer exit pressure, and pump exit pressure. A fourth force cuts in varying with the square of the speed of pump rotation above a predetermined value of this speed.
