The top plate of the tripod is fitted with a gripping face (4,5) and a spirit level (7). The gripping face is used to fix a measuring apparatus, e.g. a theodolite, telescope, camera etc. The tripod permits the measuring instruments are to be kept in place horizontally and vertically with an accuracy of one micron, and is capable of supporting appts.
