The heat exchanger for solid fuel domestic central heating consists of parallel, cranked tubes joined at each end by collector tubes. The horizontal grid supports the burning fuel, and the vertical grid is covered by a metal, thermal recovery plate. This consists of at least two parallel plates supported at each end and inclined at 8 to 10 degrees to the vertical, leaving a horizontal slot 1 cm wide to direct hot air from the fire onto the vertical tubes, but no vertical gap between the plates. The tubes are soldered into grooves on the backs of the inclined plates to provide strength and a thermal bridge.
