Heat exchangers are suspended vertically in the roof of a reactor so their lower part is immersed in a prim. fluid, e.g. liq. Na. Each exchanger consists of an outer casing contg. an axial pipe down which a sec. fluid, e.g. liq. Na, flows into a chamber in the domed base of the outer casing. Above the chamber is an annular bundle of heat exchanger tubes; and the sec. Na flows up the bores of the tubes towards a top outlet. The prim. Na is pumped downwards along the outside surfaces of the exchanger tubes to heat the sec. Na. In the chamber in the domed base of the casing is a distibutor-deflector, consisting of an inverted, truncated cone cup with its wide open end fixed to the dome. The cup is surrounded by a coaxial, conical ring, the smaller dia. of which is fixed to the dome. The height of the cup and ring is less than 25% of the height of the chamber, the top of the latter being formed by the bottom surface of the lower tube plate.
