The key is formed as a flat plate which penetrates into the interior of the key slot provided in the rotary part of the barrel. The key has one or more moving pins which are displaced by projections in the lock barrel so that when all the pins are displaced by a required distance the rotor of the lock is free to rotate in the barrel, and to thus displace the latch. Alternatively, depressions on the key surface may permit motion of the pins in the lock barrel. The passage for the moving pins in the key extends in the same plane as the key flat, while pins in the barrel are at an angle to this plane. The pin may be actuated either by a raised projection on the barrel edge, displacing the pin across the key against a spring, or by a depression in the key surface which allows a pin in the barrel rotor to fall into line with the rotor edge under spring force.
