The core is cooled by molten metal in a reactor vessel contg. intermediate heat exchangers and prim. circulation pumps, plus an inner casing forming an upper hot zone and a lower cold zone. One or more cold traps are suspended from holes in the reactor roof. Each trap consists of a vertical cylinder with inlets in the hot zone and outlets in the cold zone of the reactor vessel. In each trap is a removable mesh filter; and the pressure difference in the inner casing caused by the prim. pumps compels the molten metal to circulate through the filter. The great advantage is that the invention eliminates the need for electromagnetic pumps used in conventional cold traps and of poor reliability.
