A safety device for pneumatic railway brakes comprises a piston valve (V) and a pneumatic ram (P) which moves to hold a pneumatic rod (VP) in a raised position. Should the pipe connecting the auxiliary reservoir (RA) to the top of the piston valve (V) be ruptured, the pressure in the actuating chamber (B) forces the piston valve upwards before passing into another chamber (E) and lifting the pneumatic rod. The ram is directly connected to the auxiliary reservoir (RA) so that on failure it holds the rod in a raised position, allowing the brake cylinder spring (CFR) to release.
