摘要
A jet of molten metal, dropping more or less vertically is passed through an alternating magnetic field of sufficient intensity and frequency to flatten it to a ribbon of molten metal. If the required thickness of the ribbon is "a" the frequency (f) must be at least the value given in formula (I) where (mu) is the magnetic permeability of the molten metal, and (sigma) its electrical conductivity. The ribbon is cooled suddenly, e.g. by contacting a rotating chilled cylinder, and super-quenched to produce a strip of solid metal with an amorphous structure. This method of flattening a jet by magnetic means is preferable to running molten metal through a narrow slit, which is susceptible to high wear in service. It produces a much more uniform product, both dimensionally and structurally, as it does not suffer from turbulence.
