PURPOSE:To quickly measure S in molten metal, by forming the cell through the connection of the substance having a given S potential and the molten metal to be measured with the solid electrolyte including CaS mainly and TiS2, and measuring the electromotive force and the temperature of the said molten metal. CONSTITUTION:The metal having a given S potential (activity or concentration), sulfate of the metal or the metal including S is put in the heat resistance tube 4 as the standard electrode 3, the solid electrolyte 2 including CaS as major constituent and TiS2 by 1-2wt% is inserted in contact with the electrode 3, the electromotive force measuring cell is constituted with the electrode 3, lead 5 in contact with the electrolyte 2 and the lead 6 in contact with the measured molten metal. Further, the thermocouple 7 measuring the temperature of molten metal is in the silica tube 8 and held with the heat resistant member 12. The lower end of the main body 1 having the said cell and temperature measurement is immersed in the molten metal to measure the electromotive force and temperature at the same time and to operate the amount of S in the molten metal with the specific equation. Thus, accurate measurement can be made in the speed of 4-5 seconds.
