A pigment composition in bead form is prepared by mixing 1 part by weight of a water-insoluble organic base which melts below 100 DEG C with an aqueous dispersion containing 0.25-2.3 parts by weight of a pigment, at a temperature above the melting point of the organic base in the presence of a protective colloid until the pigment has combined with the base, and the aqueous phase is virtually free of pigments, and isolating the resulting beads. These pigmented beads can be used for the production of inks and for colouring surface coatings and plastics.
