PURPOSE:An oxygen adsorption and desorption agent applicable to living bodies that is made of a phospholipid liposome clathrate with iron (II) porphyrin complex, which is stable in a water phase or a water-containing solvent system at room temperature, thus effecting reversible oxygen adsorption and adsorption according to the difference in oxygen partial pressure. CONSTITUTION:The objective oxygen adsorption and desorption agent is made of a phospholipid liposome clathrate with a compound of the formula (R is tert.- butyl; R1 is alkylene; R2, R3 are groups not inhibiting the coordination of the imidazole groups to the center iron; R4 is hydrophobic substituent). The compound is stable even in the coexistence with water and the liposome used for clathration is a phospholipid such as phosphatidyl choeine, so the clathrate is biocompatible. The clathrate is obtained by reducing the corresponding iron (III) complex to its iron (II) complex, adding the product to a phospholipid, distilling off the solvent, and adding to an aqueous medium in an inert gas atmosphere to give a multilayered liposome dispersion, then teating the dispersion with ultrasonic waves to form monolayered liposome.
