PURPOSE:To obtain picture data with a high SN ratio by estimating the attitude of a satellite by the satellite-flight-direction spectral power distribution of data acquired by a synthetic aperture radar mounted on the satellite. CONSTITUTION:The synthetic aperture radar 2 on the satellite 1 which transmits a microwave and acquires a reflected wave from the ground surface generates picture data from the acquired data. The power spectrum distribution of this data coincides with the antenna gain pattern of the radar 2, so the frequency F of the data in the direction of the radar 2 is found. This frequency F is represented by the function of the circular pitch thetap and yaw thetay of the attitude of the satellite and the distance R between the satellite and ground surface. When frequencies F1' and F2' in the direction BS are found at different distances R1 and R2 and frequency F1 and F2 found from attitude values thetap and thetay determined by using another attitude sensor are denoted as F1 and F2, attitude values thetap' and thetay' are precisely obtained from an equation 1.
