PURPOSE:To prevent the damage on the wall surface in long side frames and to obtain an ingot having smooth surface by controlling the grasping force of the long side frames by using a hydraulic cylinder according to the pressure of the bulging of the molten steel changing with casting conditions. CONSTITUTION:The rate of strain in a clamping shaft 5 is detected with a detector 12 from a strain gage 12' and the rate of strain is inputted to a converter 15 by which grasping force P is determined. Said force is inputted to a comparing claculator 16. On the other hand, when information is inputted from a setter 17 for casting conditions from the calculator 16, the bulging force F by the static pressure of molten steel under said casting condition is calculated. The force F and the forcef P are further compared and calcultaed with the calculator 16, the result thereof is inputted to a hydraulic control device 14 to control a cylinder 13 so that the predetermined set grasping force P'(F=P'P) is attained under the condition of F=P under which no gap x' is formed.
