ABSTRACTA method of identifying nonlinear optical mediawith large third order coefficients of susceptibility andmeans adapted to utilize such media are disclosed. Inparticular a method of selecting specific superlatticematerials is presented. Optical devices requiring fastresponse times can particularly employ such superlatticesadvantageously. Three nonlinear optical devices arepresented. The first is an optical switch formed by aninterface between a nonlinear medium and a linear medium.The second is a Fabry-Perot etalon adapted to function asa bistable optical device. The third is a superlatticephase conjugate mirror.
