Prim. and sec. amines are isolated from aq., organic and aq-organic solns. contg. them by distn., rectification or extn. in the presence of CO2. Reaction with CO2 decreases the volatility of prim. and sec. amines (while the volatility of H2O and other organic cpds. remains unchanged) and decreases their solubility in organic solvents, so that sepn. can be effected under less severe conditions. In the case of rectification, CO2 is pref. circulated continuously through the system. In the case of distn. or extn, the soln. is pref. satd. with CO2 before treatment.
