The mechanism is intended for maintaining the tension in a mooring cable (G) between pre-determined limits. It is arranged between the moored cable end and the deck-mounted cable winch (F) and comprises a frame carrying four loop-forming pulleys, of which the second (B) and fourth (P) are fixed whilst the quayside first and the third are carried by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders and spring loaded in the tensioning direction. - The spring load on the first pulley is lighter than that on the third whilst the movement of the third is detected by two limit switches of which one (EKI) releases the winch brake and operates the winch to take up cable slack and the other (EK2) releases the brake to pay out the cable. The switches of all cables on the same side of the vessel are arranged in series, so that the brakes are only released if all these switches are simultaneously actuated.
