Method for converting mattes of a non-ferrous metal into this metal or a sulphide of this metal in an oblong tank with refractory lining, making it possible to minimize clogging of the nozzles and wear of the coating by injecting the oxidizing gas under a pressure from 3.6 to 10.8 bars approximately through a plurality of spaced narrow nozzles, which penetrate the gas in separate continuous, under-expanded jets extending to a point distant from the ends of said nozzles.
