Copolymer comprises free radical initiated addn. polymerisation prod. of monomer of formula (I) (where R1-R3 are H or opt. substd. alkyl or -aryl) and a second monomer chosen from maleic anhydride and opt. substd. maleimides. A terpolymer comprises the free radical initiated polymerisation product of (I), maleic anhydride and a vinyl termonomer, pref. styrene. Pref. (I) is isobutenyl succinic anhydride. The polymers are used as epoxy curatives, detergent builders, boiler scale removal agents, additives for coatings and adhesives, ion exchange resins and fibre size. Since the anhydride gp. of the polymer is not attached directly to the backbone, the polymer is more flexible when cured and/or more reactive.
