Sieving refuse from hammer mill - medium sieve fraction ballistically classified with coarse fraction added after further hammer milling

Process for treating domestic or industrial refuse comprises hammer-milling, sieving, and roll-bounce (ballistic) classification. After possible removal of larger pieces of paper etc. and of ferromagnetic matter, the refuse passes through an initial disintegrator followed by (mechanical) sieving. A sieve fraction between 10-18 mm. and 35-70 mm. is fed to a ballistic classifier whilst the coarser sieve fraction passes to a second hammer mill from which the thereby further disintegrated product is mixed with the fraction passing to the classifier, which may have 5-8 mm. openings to let through material for mixing with the finest sieve fraction.
