In a compensation and balancing method for m-phase systems, a short dead time of the actuating element and decoupling of the phase-current control loops are achieved. This is achieved by means of the following method steps: the instantaneous real power Pt is formed by multiplication of the mains voltages and subsequent addition, and the instantaneous reactive power Qt, which is orthogonal thereto, is formed by multiplication of the orthogonal mains voltages by the mains currents and subsequent sum formation in a measurement converter (4); the time responses of the instantaneous reactive power Qt and the instantaneous real power Pt are broken down into their spectral components by means of a moving Fourier analysis, and the Fourier coefficients of the Pt, Qt time responses are calculated and compared with nominal values; the Fourier coefficients of a control variable are determined from the control deviation, the time response of this control variable is formed in a measurement converter (9), the control variable controlling the reactive-power converter (3).
