Plate-shaped or grid-shaped insert elements (4, 6; 5, 8, 9) consisting of expanded clay, for example, are introduced into the cavities (3) of a clay frame (1, 2). For rapid and uniform expansion, opening materials of spherical form are mixed into the material of the insert elements. Dimensions and expandability are selected such that the porous or cellular structure resulting from subsequent burning out of the insert elements fills the cavities until at least close to the end sides of the block. The lightweight block, which is made sufficiently strong by the frame (1, 2), avoids any air circulation in the masonry structure and has favourable heat-insulation values. IMAGE
