Essential oils, pigments, sugar, pectin and cellulose from citrus peel - by extn. with water-miscible organic solvent, aq. dilution of solvent and stripping
Useful products are recovered from citrus peel waste by extraction with a non-aqs. water muscible solvent to leave a product high in cellulose and pectin. The extract is diluted with water to release the extracted essential oils which are then separated. The non-aqs. solvent is removed from the aq. layer to ppt. bioflavanoids and leave a sugar syrup. The citrus peel is coarsely ground, steamed to soften it and then may be extruded in a screw flusher to remove seeds, stems or leaves. The non-aqs. solvents include lower alkanols, lower ketones, and mono- or di-alkyl ethers of ethylene glycol and their esters and these recover essential oils (e.g. d-laminene) and oil soluble components such as carotene, chlorophyll and flavanonoids such as hesperidin. The residual pref. contg. cellulose and pectan is used as hypochlolesterolaemic agent, humectant for food, mold inhibitor and viscosity increases for drilling mud. The sugar syrup may be used as a natural sweetener for food.
