Process for obtaining hydrogen chloride free from acetylene from mixtures containing hydrogen chloride, vinyl chloride and acetylene, in which the acetylene is converted to vinyl chloride with the aid of a hydrochlorination catalyst, characterised in that the mixture is subjected to a distillation in a column, a gas phase consisting substantially of hydrogen chloride and containing acetylene is taken off in the upper part of the column, the gas phase is brought into contact with the hydrochlorination catalyst and then the gas phase is reintroduced into the column.
