The swollen extracted beans are brought into contact directly with a concentrated, decaffeinated, aqueous coffee extract, without intermediate drying. The amount of this coffee extract is larger than the amount which the extracted beans are capable of taking up. By this method, the extract content of the beans is virtually brought to the extract content of non-extracted coffee beans, without increasing the caffeine content. The excess coffee extract is removed from the coffee beans and can be recycled into the process.
