ABSTRACTTo permit ease of manufacture and eliminate thenecessity to apply a heater to the inside of a closed tube,a solid electrolyte, in elongated plate form is located withina housing which includes a sealing element separating theelongated plate into two portions; one portion is exposed tothe gas to be tested, the other portion separated from thefirst portion by a gas tight seal positioned in the housingis exposed to a reference gas, typically the oxygen in ambientair; the elongated plate extends to a terminal end portionretained in a ceramic holder for example by means of a plasticbushing, formed with an opening to permit access of thereference portion to ambient air. Preferably, the electrodesare applied to one major surface of the plate, the oppositeside having one or more heater elements applied thereto, forexample by printing or vapor deposition and in alignment withthe respective electrodes.
