ABSTRACTA method for extracting furfural, formic acid, arctic acid and otherorganic components from acidic hydrolysates of pentosan-containing plantmaterial, which hydrolysates contain pentoses, comprising the steps of convert-ing the pentoses into furfural under acidic conditions in a reactor and acounterflow heat exchanger; removing hot reaction mixture from the reactor andpassing it in heat exchange relationship to the incoming pentose-containingmaterial, thereby heating the latter and cooling the reaction mixture; andthereafter recovering furfural together with formic acid and acetic acid bydistillation from the cooled reaction mixture.
