How to make pig iron and ferus scram in a converter

The production of steel by the oxygen blowing of molten pig iron is improved by blowing oxygen into the melt via a first orifice while passing inert gas through an orifice in the base of a converter during at least part of the oxygen blowing cycle. During at least part of the time when oxygen is being blown in via the first orifice a second orifice is additionally used for oxygen blowing. At least once during the oxygen blowing cycle carbon is introduced into the reaction from above. The method allows enhanced quantities of scrap to be introduced into the melt without excessive losses of iron or manganese due to oxidation.
