A clay pipe for draining land, has the face (22) at one end sloping inwards i.e. countersunk, and the face (24) at the other end sloping outwards and downwards so that the end of one pipe (21) can fit into the end of the next pipe (23). Side guides and supporting planks are thus not required when forming a continuous pipeline. In order to avoid damage to the ends, the sharp edges are omitted, both tube ends having a flat ring portion (24, 35). The sloping face can be made in the form of an oval, viewed on the end of the pipe, so that by rotating it through a small angle it does not seat completely against the next pipe, so that the gap between can be varied.
