The equipment is for igniting a DC or AC welding arc and for stabilising an AC welding arc. Ignition or stabilisation pulses pass between workpiece and electrodes. A pulse voltage limiting stage (21) is fitted to the primary coil (11a) of an ignition transformer (11) which also has a DC source (13, 27) and a switch device (15). The secondary winding (11b) of the transformer is connected with the workpiece (19) of the electrode (18). The primary winding (11a) which passes the DC can be switched off for pulse generation by means of the switch device (15). This switch (15) has a switch transistor (16) in series with the primary winding (11a). the base of this transistor is connected with a control transistor (23) triggered by a beat generator (24).
