The method and the device for firing ordinary ceramics, in particular bricks, envisages that the goods to be fired, arranged as a charge with firing slots in the firing chamber, are heated by at least one burner working in the firing slot of the charge. The flue gases are drawn off towards the chimney via the intermediate space between kiln ceiling and charge. The working height of the burner in the firing slot is adjustable, preferably from the height of the charge and/or of the intermediate space between kiln ceiling and charge. The working position of the burner in the firing slot can also be changed during a firing phase in a temperature-dependent or program-controlled manner.
