In an earthing device having a switching contact pin (13) which can be driven in the axial direction for earthing switching and distribution devices in medium-voltage or high-voltage switching and distribution installations which are encapsulated or clad with insulating material, the switching contact pin (13) is composed of a front longitudinal region (15), which projects during the earthing process and consists of insulating material, and of a metallic contact longitudinal region (16) adjacent thereto, penetrates the encapsulation wall (11) and is surrounded in this penetration region by at least one radial seal (14). This switching contact pin, whose metallic contact longitudinal region makes contact in the earthed position directly or indirectly with both an earth lead (22) which is laid outside the encapsulation as well as with the elements (19) which are to be earthed inside the encapsulation, is moved so far into the interior of the encapsulation in its opposite, non-earthing position that its metallic contact longitudinal region is located completely inside the encapsulation; in this case, the front longitudinal region which consists of insulating material is located in the penetration region - closing said region in a sealed manner - of said encapsulation.
