The invention relates to a method for audible identification of the symbols which can be transferred from individual keys of a keyboard, in particular of typewriters or the like, to information reproduction means or by means of information transmission devices and a device to carry out the method. By pressing a special key provided on the keyboard, the keyboard is connected to a microprocessor circuit with an electronic speech chip. When a symbol key of the keyboard is pressed, the typewriter or the like performs the function assigned to the symbol and releases a pulse by means of which the speech chip announces the symbol via a loudspeaker in a colloquial language. The device 6 comprises a housing 9 in which a motherboard 14 is disposed with a microprocessor circuit 17, a speech chip, an amplifier connected to a loudspeaker 10, connection means for further functional components and a power supply unit 21.
