In a method for measuring and processing characteristic quantities of the environmental atmosphere, particularly below ground, in which a measuring instrument is used for measuring the respective characteristic quantity, the measurement value, after the characteristic quantity has been measured, is normalised in accordance with a predeterminable normalisation function to one or several parameters in the measuring instrument - triggered manually or automatically, and thereafter the normalised and possibly also the absolute measurement value is displayed and stored, a normalisation function which can be handled mathematically in the simplest possible way and requires only little storage space can be used under all circumstances in that a progression approximating the normalising function is calculated and is used as normalising function. If the characteristic quantity is measured with a measuring error which is greater than the mathematical error occurring during the calculation of the normalisation function, the number and/or the width of the progression sections of the progression are to be predetermined on the basis of the magnitude of the measurement error so that the approximation of the progression of the normalising function is not unnecessarily accurate which would lead to increased storage space requirement.
