Brake and control system for watercraft of any size and type of construction with or without separate propulsion independently of or combined with the steering gear
Auxiliary devices for watercraft for improving the manoeuvrability are known in the most varied constructions. Hydraulically, pneumatically or mechanically extendable and retractable manoeuvring and brake flaps which are attached below the water line at the bow and/or stern as well as at further points of the hull and can be used independently of or combined with the conventional steering gear of a watercraft provide a particularly favourable solution, especially since they can be used not only for changes of direction but also for reducing the speed. Their degree of effectiveness is dependent upon the number, shape and size, the setting angle relative to the flow, the extension speed of the flaps and their point of attachment to the hull. Depending on the mode of operation selected, operation and coordination of the flaps, movable simultaneously or independently of one another, is effected manually or by a control unit which prevents oversteering, abrupt manoeuvres and overstressing of the system itself as well as of the hull and converts the control signals from the conventional steering gear. If the latter fails, the manoeuvring and brake flap system provides an alternative steering system for watercraft equipped with it. For special purposes, flaps can also be of rotatable design so that they are additionally effective as a height and depth rudder.
