The invention relates both to a process for improving the efficiency of silica sol, in particular with regard to accelerating the clarification of beer, and to a process for treating beer with silica sol. In order to improve the protein-stabilising action of silica sols and their inhibitory action on filtration, with simultaneous reduction of the amounts of silica sol to be used for beer treatment, either very fine particulate water-insoluble adsorbents, preferably bentonite, are added to the silica sol or, apart from the silica sol, other water-insoluble very fine particulate adsorbents, preferably bentonite, are added to the wort or to the beer.
