Appts. is described suitable for prodn. of synthetic hydrocarbons starting from EtOH and MeOH, dehydrated by distn. with quicklime and fermentation derivs. of sugar juices and wood fibres. The alcohols are isomerised into C2H6 and CH4 by an endothermic acid-base protonic homogeneous catalysis. They are passed into a reactor formed from helical coils of the "tubular boiling" type to bring together steam and the dry hydrocarbons in circulation without mixing, the gases being at atmos. press. A chain reaction is effected by endothermic heterogenous catalysis to dissociate by thermal initiation and simultaneously association by a diffusible regenerated contact mass, obtd. by combustion of spent matrix in an integral oven using compressed air to achieve regeneration of the zeolites. The C2H6 and CH4 are transformed into diphatic and aromatic cpds. and cooled in a heat exchanger before passing to a low-temp selective stage fractionation column to store the fractions. CH4 and C3H6 gases in separate metal cylinders may be isomerised in two similar reactors. The prod. may be added as an antiknock agent to petrol to avoid the use of PbEt4.
