The mail code printer has a feed converyor supplying the individual envelopes with addresses facing up. The address is photoelectrically recorded and displayed. Each envelope is allocated a post code by the operator according to the displayed address. Behind the address recorder is a conveyor path leading to a discriminator for separating coded from uncoded envelopes. A second conveyor path is allocated to the envelope with a certain post code. The envelopes without a post code are retained temporarily in a store controlled by a special device to release the uncoded mail to the second conveyor path, when the operator has allocated a certain code. On the second conveyor path is mounted a code printer controlled by the allocation of a given code by the operator. The operator works with a keyboard in conjunction with a camera which records the main address while the store holds the mail until the camera has finished its operation.
