Method for processing postal items, whereby for individual address details are captured for each postal item and a corresponding address code attached. The method also checks to see if the item has the expected frank mark or stamp or if the item has no frank mark or the detected frank mark is different from the expected. A payment code is printed on the item and in a subsequent sorting process, items are sorted dependent on the payment code. An Independent claim is made for a device for sorting postal items according to their frank or stamp markings, whereby the device is able to categorize postal items according to a suspicion class.
