Each of three control circuits (3) is sensitive to a photodetector (7) defining a threshold of illumination and produces a control signal (I1,I2,I3) for a logic circuit (8) controlling a relay (9,10,11) which switches the sidelamps, dipped headlamps and undipped headlamps. An infrared transmitter (37) and receiver (38) are used in a system sensing reflection from an obstacle (39), which holds the control circuit (3) in the undipped headlamps on condition as long as the received infrared radiation is proved to have originated in the transmitter (37).. Lamps may be lit and extinguished entirely automatically, semi-automatically or manually.
